Your teeth cannot grow back.

Every time healthy tooth structure is removed unnecessarily, that loss is permanent. And yet conventional dentistry has built an entire system around removing more than necessary — because it is faster, simpler, and more profitable.

At Thurmont Smiles we do things differently. We remove only what is infected or structurally compromised. We rebuild what remains using materials that mimic the way your tooth was designed to work. And we plan for your future — because the tooth we save today is the tooth you still have twenty years from now.

The dental cycle most patients do not know they are in

A small cavity becomes a large filling. A large filling cracks and becomes a crown. A crown eventually fails and becomes a root canal. A root canal becomes an extraction. An extraction becomes an implant.

At every step more of your natural tooth is gone. At every step the treatment gets more invasive and more expensive. And at every step it could have been prevented — or at least slowed — with a more conservative approach from the beginning.

We break that cycle. Starting with your very first visit.

What we do differently

Remove only what must be removed

We use laser cavity detection, digital X-rays, CBCT imaging when indicated, and careful clinical examination to identify exactly where decay is present and how deep it goes. We never remove healthy tooth structure speculatively.

Before any preparation begins we apply ozone to the affected area. Ozone eliminates the bacteria driving decay without removing tooth structure. In early decay this alone can stop progression. When removal is necessary ozone has already reduced the bacterial load — meaning we take less and leave more.

Rebuilt layer by layer —

the biomimetic way

Once decay is removed we rebuild the tooth using biocompatible materials bonded in layers — just like natural tooth structure. Each layer is applied and cured precisely, creating a restoration that flexes, seals, and holds up the way your original tooth did.

The materials we use are metal free, toxin free, and selected specifically for how well they integrate with your biology. No compromises on what goes into your body.

For larger restorations we design and mill your onlay or crown-lay chairside using our CEREC technology. You leave with the final restoration the same day.

Biocompatible Materials and Fiber Reinforced Restorations

Not everything that goes into your mouth is created equal. Conventional dentistry has historically prioritized convenience and cost over biological compatibility — which is why mercury amalgam fillings, metal crowns, and chemically loaded composites became the standard.

At Thurmont Smiles we select every material based on one primary question: how well does this work with the human body?

The cornerstone of our biomimetic restorations is fiber reinforced composite — a material that changes everything about how a tooth is rebuilt. Here is why it matters:

Natural teeth are not rigid. They flex slightly under chewing forces and that flexibility is what protects them from cracking. Conventional filling materials are rigid — they do not flex with the tooth and over time that mismatch causes stress fractures, leaking margins, and eventually failure.

Fiber reinforced composite mimics the natural flexibility of dentin — the layer beneath your enamel. When we rebuild a tooth with fiber reinforced composite it moves with your tooth rather than against it. The result is a restoration that absorbs force naturally, reduces the risk of fracture, and protects the remaining tooth structure for the long term.

Our restorative materials are also:

  • Metal free and mercury free
  • Selected for low toxicity and high biocompatibility
  • Bonded rather than mechanically retained — meaning we remove less tooth to place them
  • Tested for long term stability so what we place today holds up for years

We believe what goes into your mouth matters as much as what we take out. Every material choice is intentional and every recommendation comes with an explanation so you understand exactly what is being placed and why.

Do you really need a crown?

If you have been told you need a crown, ask whether a biomimetic onlay or inlay could achieve the same result with significantly less tooth removal. In most cases the answer is yes.

Dr. Oza holds a Surgical Masters - "No Crown Dentistry" certification and is a proud member of the Academy of Biomimetic Dentistry. (Click for more info on their website). These are not honorary titles — they represent advanced training in how to save more tooth structure and deliver restorations that last.

A crown is sometimes the right answer. But it should be the last resort — not the default.

This is for you if:

  • You have a cavity and want to preserve as much natural tooth as possible
  • You have old large fillings that are failing or causing sensitivity
  • You have been told you need a crown and want a second opinion
  • You have a cracked tooth and want conservative repair
  • You are concerned about the materials currently in your mouth
  • You want dentistry that plans for your long term health — not just today's problem

Ozone — The Invisible Tool That Changes Everything

Before any drilling begins we apply ozone to the affected area. Ozone is a naturally occurring form of oxygen that is one of the most powerful antibacterial agents available in dentistry — and it leaves no chemical residue in your body.

Here is why this matters for biomimetic care specifically:

Decay is driven by bacteria. If you remove the decay but leave the bacterial environment unchanged, new decay begins immediately. Ozone eliminates that bacterial environment — in the cavity, in the surrounding tissue, and in the early decay that has not yet required removal.

In early stage cavities ozone alone can stop decay progression without any drilling at all. When removal is necessary ozone has already reduced the bacterial load so dramatically that we remove significantly less tissue than would otherwise be needed.

Less bacteria. Less drilling. More tooth saved.

We use ozone as a gas applied directly to the tooth and as ozonated water for irrigation — both before and after restoration placement to ensure the cleanest possible environment for healing and bonding.

CEREC — Same Day. No Temporaries. No Second Visits.

When a biomimetic restoration requires an onlay or crown-lay — a restoration that covers part of the tooth rather than the entire tooth — precision matters enormously. The fit, the margins, the bite relationship — everything has to be exact or the restoration fails prematurely and more tooth is lost in the process.

CEREC is how we achieve that precision chairside in a single appointment.

Here is what that means for you:

We take a digital scan of your prepared tooth — no messy impression material, no gagging, no guessing. That scan feeds into our design software where we engineer your restoration with accuracy down to fractions of a millimeter. The design goes directly to our in-office milling unit which carves your onlay or crown-lay from a solid block of high quality ceramic. We place it, check the fit and bite, and make any final adjustments.

You leave with your permanent restoration the same day. No temporary that can fall off. No vulnerable tooth waiting two weeks. No second appointment.

For biomimetic cases specifically CEREC is invaluable because it allows us to design conservative restorations — covering only what needs to be covered — rather than defaulting to a full crown that requires grinding down the entire tooth.

Same day. Precise. Conservative. Permanent.

Your Natural Tooth Is Irreplaceable. We Treat It That Way.

We cannot make nature. We cannot grow back enamel. We cannot regenerate dentin. What you were born with is the best version of what your tooth will ever be — and every unnecessary cut takes you further from that.

At Thurmont Smiles we plan for the patient you will be in twenty years, not just the appointment in front of us. That means removing less today so you have more to work with tomorrow. It means using materials that respect your biology. It means telling you honestly when a crown is necessary and when it is not.

If you have a cavity, an old failing filling, or a tooth you have been told needs a crown — come in first. Let us show you what is actually possible when dentistry works with your body instead of against it.

We see new patients Tuesday through Friday.
