Which Type of Cleaning Do You Really Need?
You know that you need a professional "cleaning", but what type of cleaning will support your overall health?
In our biological dental practice, we don’t just “clean teeth.”
We protect your entire body by treating the mouth as part of your whole health.
That starts with choosing the right type of cleaning for the condition of your gums and bone:
- Prophy (Regular Cleaning)
- SRP (Scaling & Root Planing, or “Deep Cleaning”)
What Is a Prophy (Regular Cleaning)?
A prophy is for mouths that are generally healthy.
It’s ideal when:
- Your gums are not infected
- Pocket depths are in the healthy range
- There is no active periodontal (gum) disease
What we do in a prophy:
- Gently remove soft plaque and tartar above the gumline
- Polish and clean the teeth
- Support a healthy, balanced oral microbiome
Goal: Routine wellness and prevention—keeping you out of periodontal disease.
What gum disease actually is
Gum disease starts silently — often with no pain at all.
- Gingivitis is the early stage: red, swollen, or bleeding gums that most people dismiss as normal
- Left untreated it progresses to periodontitis, where the infection reaches the bone that holds your teeth in place
- The driver is bacterial biofilm — a living community of microorganisms around your teeth that, when out of balance, becomes destructive
Bleeding gums are not normal. They are a signal worth paying attention to.
Biological approach to gum treatment: The difference
What Is Gum Disease?
A key player is dental plaque—a biofilm of bacteria that naturally forms around the teeth. In a healthy state, this biofilm is balanced. When it’s not removed properly or the body is under stress, it can shift into a pathogenic biofilm that drives inflammation, gum infection, and destruction of the supporting bone.
Why a Biological Approach to Gum Treatment?
A strictly mechanical or “one-size-fits-all” cleaning doesn’t address:
- The mouth–body connection (how chronic inflammation in the gums can stress the immune system).
- The need to support a healthy microbiome, not just kill everything.
- The importance of using safe, non‑toxic methods when we disinfect and heal.
Our goal is to:
- Control infection gently and effectively.
- Support your body’s own healing through healthier biofilm, immune support, and nutrition.
- Avoid unnecessary chemicals, drugs, and aggressive procedures whenever possible.
Gentle Deep Cleaning (Biological Scaling & Root Planing)
When plaque and tartar build up below the gumline, we perform a meticulous deep cleaning to:
- Remove hardened deposits and infected biofilm from the tooth roots.
- Smooth the root surfaces so healthy gums can reattach more easily.
We pair this with natural antibacterial support instead of harsh chemicals, to lower the bacterial load while respecting your tissues and microbiome.
What to expect:
- Treatment is comfortable — we use anesthetic gel before any numbing
- We do not polish immediately after treatment as we want nothing left under the gums
- A follow up appointment is scheduled to check healing and remove any tartar that surfaces as swelling reduces
- Maintenance visits every three months keep the results stable long term
Prophy ("Regular cleaning") vs. SRP ("Deep Cleaning") : How We Decide?
- If your gums are stable and healthy → we recommend prophy (wellness cleaning).
If there are signs of active infection → we recommend SRP (deep cleaning) with biological support and then customized maintenance.
A typical biological gum evaluation includes:
- Comprehensive gum exam
- Measuring pocket depths around each tooth.
- Checking for bleeding, swelling, and recession.
- Saliva Bacterial Test- to know exactly what TYPE of bacteria are present in your mouth and how they will affect your other organs in the body, like heart, brain, lungs, kidneys etc.
- Imaging and risk review
- X‑rays (only as necessary) to evaluate bone levels.
- Discussion of lifestyle, nutrition, and systemic risk factors.
- Your “Gum Health Map”
- A simple explanation of where infection is present.
- Clear staging: health, gingivitis, or periodontitis.
- Personalized Treatment Plan
- Which areas need deep cleaning.
- Whether ozone, laser, or other natural supports are recommended.
- A tailored home‑care and follow‑up schedule.
What Happens After SRP?
Many patients move into a structured healing plan, which may include:
- A focused re-evaluation visit (often around 30 days) to check healing and polish
- Transition into periodontal maintenance visits instead of basic cleanings
- Home-care recommendations that respect your biology and immune system
-
Not Sure Which One You Need?
We start every new patient with a comprehensive exam and gum evaluation so we can tell you clearly:
- What’s happening in your mouth
- Whether you need prophy, SRP, or a combination
- How it impacts your overall wellness
Ready to find out what type of cleaning your mouth really needs?
Bad breath is often a sign of deeper imbalance—whether from gum infection, a coated tongue, or even underlying gut issues.
Gum Disease and Bad Breath: The Hidden Connection
You’re not imagining it—chronic bad breath is often a sign of gum infection.
Periodontal disease is a hidden infection under the gums. Bacteria living deep in the pockets around your teeth break down food particles and release foul‑smelling sulfur gases.
In a healthy mouth, dental plaque is a balanced biofilm that helps protect your teeth and gums. When that balance is lost, more aggressive bacteria take over. The result? Red, swollen gums, bone loss around teeth, and stubborn bad breath that brushing and mints can’t fix.
By treating the infection—through gentle, biological deep cleanings and natural supports like ozonated water—we reduce the harmful bacteria in your gums. Patients often notice fresher breath and healthier gums as healing begins.
Our Technology for periodontal health and Natural Treatments information:
Ozone Therapy
Ozone is a powerful, oxygen‑based therapy used in many biological practices. It can be applied as a gas or in ozonated water to:
- Reduce harmful bacteria, viruses, and fungi in deep gum pockets.
- Help cleanse and oxygenate the area to support better healing.
This gives us a way to disinfect pockets without relying solely on systemic antibiotics.
Laser Support (When Appropriate)
Where available and appropriate, we may use laser energy to:
- Further disinfect periodontal pockets.
- Gently remove diseased tissue and stimulate the healing response.
Laser support can complement deep cleaning and ozone, making treatment more conservative and comfortable.
Natural Rinses, Probiotics & Home Therapies
Healing doesn’t stop when you leave the office. We often integrate:
- Natural rinses to help control harmful bacteria and soothe tissues.
- Oral probiotics to encourage a healthier oral microbiome.
- Optional oil pulling and other simple at‑home practices that support cleaner teeth and calmer gums.
- Discussion about benefits of Ayurveda in dentistry including using a tongue scraper and herbal treatments
These approaches are chosen to be safe, cost‑effective, and biocompatible with your overall wellness goals.
